The NYU Game Center’s annual PRACTICE conference asks the question, “What is the practice of game design?” We invite you to explore this question with us once again when PRACTICE 2013 returns on November 15th- 17th.
Out of all the disciplines needed to make a game, game design is the most critical but least understood. PRACTICE is a yearly conference for professional game designers that explores the ideas and methods of game design. PRACTICE brings veteran designers across computer and videogames, paper games and sports, over three days to take a close look at the nuts and bolts of game design. Through lectures and panels, workshops and discussion, we explore the practice of game design, with a focus on the concrete, day-to-day techniques of designing games, with plenty of time for playing and socializing as well!
Exclusive speakers you won’t see anywhere else, an intimate gathering of working designers for high level discussion, and lots of time for social events in NYC makes this conference is a true must-attend for anyone interested in game design.
Last year, conference goers created a collaborative record of the many threads and conversations brought up over the course of the conference. We encourage you to browse through this amazing and entertaining record of PRACTICE 2012 and learn why PRACTICE is not to miss!
We also have video recordings of each of the lectures on our Vimeo page! Each lecture is full of unique insight, we welcome you to enjoy and share them!
The weekend of October 28 saw the Game Center playing host to Practice: Game Design in Detail. This three-day game design conference gathered together around 80 practicing game designers for presentations, panel discussions, and a chance for socializing among peers. For those that were unable to attend, we encourage you check out some of these articles written by Practice attendees. We’ll also be posting videos of some of the talks in the near future!
The prolific Leigh Alexander wrote individual articles for several talks, as did Evan Narcisse of Kotaku. iPlayWinner posted a recording of the Designers, Players – Fight! panel. Kill Screen and Destructoid had their writers summarize the events on the whole, and many participants shared their thoughts on their personal blogs and websites throughout last week. The coverage is widespread and varied, and, most encouragingly, extremely positive. If you missed this year’s Practice, we’ll be hosting the conference again next year, and we hope to see you there!
What is the practice of game design?
Out of all the disciplines needed to make a game, game design is the most critical but least understood. PRACTICE is an unprecedented gathering of professional game designers that takes a rigorous look at the ideas and methods of game design.
Bringing together veteran designers across computer and videogames, paper games and sports, PRACTICE takes a close look at the nuts and bolts of game design. Through lectures and panels, workshops and discussion, we will explore the practice of game design, with a head focus on the concrete, day-to-day activity of designing games. And there will be plenty of time of gameplay and socializing too.
PRACTICE is not a conference about business, technology, or how to break into the industry. If balancing the variables in a virtual economy or theorizing about the effect of rule changes on a player’s emotional experience sounds like fun to you, this is the conference you’ve been waiting for.
This two day conference will be held at the Game Center on October 28th-30th, will a full schedule of events listed on the PRACTICE website.
Space is limited, so those interested in participating must purchase tickets.

Game Design in Detail
October 28 – 30
An NYU Game Center conference
PRACTICE is an advanced conference for working game designers.
Featuring high-level presentations and deep discussion, PRACTICE
looks closely at the details of what makes games tick and how game
designers solve problems on and off the computer. Not a conference
about technology, business, or education, the focus of PRACTICE is
squarely on the creative process of game design.
More details coming soon.
