Alonso Canales-Echeverria

Alonso Canales-Echeverria is a game developer from Chile. He studied computer science and business administration during his undegrad before deciding to nurture his passion for games by pursuing the MFA program at the NYU Game Center. Alonso is a co-founder of Chilean indie studio Smarto Club, and has worked on games like Teacup, Bubblegum Galaxy and Rental.

Why are you studying games?
Making games for a living is a fun way to make a living, but there's more to games as a medium than chasing trends on what's selling on Steam.
Describe your favorite project made by a classmate.
I'm a sucker for games with strong personal or auto-biographical elements to them, and that in regard I really enjoyed TWWLIIAHMP by Xia, a series of playable vignettes about the world we live in, and Tower by Guy Ginat, a first person museum-like exhibition about systems and the personal attachment one forms with them.
Describe your most embarrassing playtesting moment.
I remember once showing a game that had a gamepad controls but I added a last moment tutorial... that could only be advanced with the keyboard. I spent the playtest session pressing the keyboard to help players get through the tutorial...
