Why are you studying games?
I study games because I believe in the power of games. I think they play an important role in our culture, and I want to be part of that. As well, I love stories, and I think that games have the ability to tell stories in new an interesting ways that excite me.
Describe your favorite project made by a classmate.
My favorite game by a classmate is Omino by Chris Williams and Ben Costrell. It amazes me because though I love narrative games, this is a game that is zero narrative and all strategy. I usually start mornings at the Game Center playing a game against the AI, and take breaks by playing a game with my team members.
Describe your most embarrassing playtesting moment.
I had a person who was so excited about VR that the controller flew out of their hand.
What's your secret weapon?
I get really excited. I'm actually a golden retriever dressed up as a human.
Describe one memorable lecture, assignment, or exercise you've had at the Game Center.
We were testing in-game economies by roleplaying character archetypes and interacting with each other, and those of us who had "died" started a dance line. We all still remember the dance and will occasionally break out when the song comes. on
How has the Game Center changed your thinking about games?
It changed everything about games. I came in with all of these grand ideas and wanting to break games and push back against a colonialist mindset imprinted into the fabric of games...and then 2 weeks into the program I realized I know nothing about games. I still harbor experimental ideas, and want to push the edge, but it was amazing to be able to have that moment of realization.
What do you hope to accomplish after school?
I want to make newer and better narrative games.
What's the last great game you played and what's great about it?
The last great game I played was "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice." It was an amazing narrative experience, and was just a beautiful game with an intuitive combat system that all tied back into the narrative.
