Inno Spelman

Hi! My name's Inno and I'm a ✨🏳️‍🌈 bi transgirl 🏳️‍🌈✨ studying game design at the NYU Game Center. I lean into my engineering/animation background as a technical artist, designing aesthetics through systems. Aside from what I do, I have a soft spot in my heart for quadruped tanks, witches, radical political ideologies, and queer studies which occasionally show up in my games. Chat me up if you see me around!

Why are you studying games?
It's a funny story! My parents didn't really understand video games back when I was a kid so they would routinely take them away from me. I got around it by... well.. making video games. So I guess this is just me doing what I do best! I've been fighting my parents and public school faculty since 2015 to make games and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.
What's your secret weapon?
Inverse Kinematics because they're so cool! I use them to animate characters all the time, they work by simulating movement via algorithms. When it all comes together it looks really nice <3
How has the Game Center changed your thinking about games?
I never really thought of games as being a large space for queer people. But having learned at the Game Center the rich history tying the LGBTQ+ community to video games I've felt a lot more welcome. It really helped me feel confident with myself when I started transitioning in my sophomore year that I had a place among other game developers.
What do you hope to accomplish after school?
I'm really interested in travelling to Okinawa because of its history being subjugated under colonial conditions and its tradition of protest. I've learned so much about its struggle that it exists as a symbolic place for me to understand the intersection of finance capital, the military industrial complex, and race relations in the pacific. Maybe one day I can visit the place I write so much about and witness the revolutionary tradition for myself.
What's your favorite New York City spot?
